Yesterday on Twitter Terry Teachout — my favourite critic, of theater for the Wall Street Journal and at giant for Commentary — commented on The Third Man, the compelling 1949 movie. If you’re a fan of the movie, you’ll undoubtedly recall that it was written by Graham Greene and contains a chilling star flip by Orson Welles. Terry touted the movie as a scrupulous research in ethical complexity. It is all that and extra.
Thinking that he had simply watched it on TCM as a part of the TCM’s annual 31 Days of Oscar, I requested what different blasts from the previous he would suggest. He graciously responded with a listing of his favourite underappreciated upcoming movies within the 31 days lineup within the order that they are going to play on the channel. I assumed some readers may respect this as a public service announcement.
Here are ten favorites of mine (listed within the order that they’ll be proven on @tcm) that have a tendency to not pop up on greatest-of lists:
Here Comes Mrs. Jordan
The Naked Spur
One Way Passage
I Remember Mama
Theodora Goes Wild
Lust for Life
Anatomy of a Murder

BONUS: In a observe-up tweet Terry added for what it’s value (to me, rather a lot) that Dodsworth can also be considered one of David Mamet’s two favourite movies. The different of Mamet’s favorites is The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp.
